Healthy Body, Healthy Mind

For as long as I can remember, my weight has been something I have had an unhealthy relationship with. Growing up, I was always on some kind of diet. I have even tried all those “fad” diets without much success.

When I moved to the United States in 2006, my weight started to balloon. I had never lived on my own, so I was depressed and homesick all the time and I turned to food for comfort. Now the first few months, I was jobless and broke so you can imagine the kind of foods I was eating (butter noodles, ramen packets, sugary cereals, etc.). And of course, the infamous America portion sizes did not help.

After having Gavin in 2012, my weight REALLY got out of control.

I was so tired all the time, and so stressed all the time, that comfort eating took control of my life. I remember eating french toast 2-3 times a day!

Now don’t let these photos deceive you. Behind that smile was a miserable person who was constantly in search of happiness and just never seemed to find it. I was a nervous wreck that would over think every single situation. I felt like people were judging me all time time, even when they weren’t.

With such an unhealthy body, came an unhealthy mind.

In December of 2014, something inside me snapped. I was tired of being unhealthy. I was tired of being unhappy. I could not even chase my then 2 year old around the house without losing my breath and getting dizzy.

I looked around for a diet that I felt like I could stick to and that is when I stumbled upon Weight Watchers. It was the perfect fit for me because it did not feel like a diet. It was a lifestyle.

It taught me that I can eat more, IF I ate the good foods. However, it also let me eat pizza, and burgers, and pasta. Any diet that has its own pizza point calculator is the one for me!

The first few pounds shed almost instantly. The first month, I lost 11 pounds.. 6 months later, I was down almost 40 pounds JUST by being on Weight Watchers.

After losing the initial 40 pounds, I decided it was time to join a gym. I was feeling better mentally and physically, but something was missing. I started with simple cardio.. walking on a treadmill, the elliptical machine, and light weights.

Wow! What a difference that made to my state of mind. I was more confident, I was more happy, and I was full of energy!

Fast forward to today, I have lost 60 pounds. I enjoy Zumba and I love lifting heavy weights. I love pushing my body to see how much I can achieve and I surprise myself every time because I end up being able to do it.

I am not done yet, I have more to achieve… but I am so proud of myself for how far I have come along.

This journey has made me a better person, a happier person, a stronger person, but most importantly, it has made me a better mom.

  1. I’ve tried WW many times before but never put the time in to really follow…it would be awesome to see what YOU eat in a week. Can you share? Congratulations you look amazing!
